Why This Distinction Changes Everything
In a cyber attack, your generator works. Your solar panels work. Your battery bank works. Your car starts. Your HAM radio functions. The infrastructure is targeted — not your physical devices. Your preparation gear is fully operational. The challenge is supply chain collapse, communication blackout, and duration.
In an EMP scenario, any unprotected electronic device may be permanently non-functional. That includes your generator's electronic controller. Your solar charge controller. Your battery management system. Your car's ECU. Your HAM radio. Everything you prepared could be rendered useless if you didn't protect it first.

The EMP-Specific Preparation Steps
Faraday Cage Protection
A Faraday cage blocks electromagnetic pulses from reaching the electronics inside. You need one — or several — for your backup critical electronics. What goes inside:
- Backup HAM radio (keep your primary one out, protect the backup)
- Spare phone and battery bank
- Critical car fuses and spare ECU if you can source one
- Backup solar charge controller
- Medical devices that are battery powered
Commercial Faraday bags from Mission Darkness are the easiest solution. A metal trash can with a tight-fitting lid, lined with cardboard, works as a DIY alternative. The key is no gaps — the cage must completely enclose the device with no contact between the device and the metal exterior.
Older Vehicles Are More Resilient
Pre-1980 vehicles with minimal electronics are significantly more resistant to EMP damage. Carbureted engines, mechanical fuel pumps, and points-style ignition systems have no computers to fry. If you have an older vehicle in working condition, keep it. In an EMP scenario it may be your only transportation.
Manual Backups For Everything
In an EMP scenario you need manual alternatives for every electronic system you depend on. Manual water pump instead of electric. Hand crank radio instead of powered. Paper maps instead of GPS. Mechanical watch instead of digital. Build the manual layer deliberately — not as an afterthought.
The Cyber Attack-Specific Preparation Steps
Cyber attack preparation focuses on duration and supply chain collapse rather than protecting your electronics. Your gear works — the challenge is that the infrastructure supporting normal life is gone for an extended period.
- 90-day minimum food and water supply — cyber attacks take weeks to months to resolve
- Cash on hand — payment systems fail immediately
- Full fuel tanks — gas pumps stop within hours
- Communication plan that doesn't depend on cell towers
- Community network — information sharing becomes critical
