Water prep seems simple. Store water, drink water, survive. But after years of researching grid-down scenarios and building my own family's water system from scratch, I've seen the same mistakes repeated over and over — mistakes that could turn a manageable situation into a life-threatening one.
Here are the five biggest ones — and exactly how to fix each one.
Storing The Wrong Amount
FEMA recommends one gallon per person per day. That number is technically survivable but leaves zero margin for cooking, basic hygiene, or medical needs. In a real grid-down scenario — especially one involving physical exertion, heat, or stress — you need closer to two gallons per person per day minimum.
A family of four following FEMA's guidance stores 84 gallons for a 3-week supply. That same family actually needs 168 gallons minimum for the same period. Most people are storing half what they actually need.
THE FIX: Calculate at 2 gallons per person per day. Family of 4 for 30 days = 240 gallons minimum. Build to that number in phases.
Using The Wrong Containers
Milk jugs. Juice containers. Old soda bottles. These are the three containers most people reach for — and all three are wrong. Milk jugs are made from HDPE plastic that degrades and leaches into water over time. Juice and soda containers retain residual sugars that breed bacteria even after washing.
The other common mistake is storing water in containers that weren't designed for long-term water storage — decorative jugs, random food-grade buckets without proper lids, or barrels without UV protection.
THE FIX: Use purpose-built water storage containers — WaterBOB bathtub liners, food-grade BPA-free barrels rated for water storage, or commercial water storage tanks. Blue containers (not clear) block UV light that promotes algae growth.
No Filtration Backup
Storing water is only half the system. The other half is being able to make any water source safe to drink. Stored water can become contaminated. Your storage containers can fail. You may need to use rainwater, river water, or water from a neighbor's pool.
The families I've seen struggle most in grid-down scenarios are the ones who stored water but had no way to treat water from alternative sources. Their stored supply ran out on Day 10 and they had nothing.
THE FIX: Own a gravity-fed filter (Berkey is the gold standard), a portable squeeze filter (Sawyer), and chemical treatment tablets as backup. These three layers cover every scenario.
Not Rotating Your Supply
Stored water doesn't last forever. Even properly stored water in sealed containers should be rotated every 6 to 12 months. Water that sits too long can develop off-tastes, and containers can leach chemicals over time. Most people store water once and forget about it — then discover in an emergency that it's been sitting for 3 years.
Water stored in clear containers exposed to light is particularly problematic — algae and bacteria can develop even in tap water that was initially clean.
THE FIX: Label every container with a fill date. Set a calendar reminder every 6 months to rotate. Use the old water in your garden, then refill. Build rotation into your routine — not your emergency response.
Forgetting The Tap Will Stop Working
This is the one that gets people every time. Municipal water systems depend on electric pumps to maintain pressure. When the grid goes down, those pumps stop. In most major grid-down scenarios, water pressure begins dropping within 24 hours and stops entirely within 48 hours.
Most people assume they can fill containers after an event is announced. By the time they realize the grid failure is serious, the tap has already slowed to a trickle. The window to use municipal water as a free fill source is measured in hours — not days.
THE FIX: Fill everything immediately when a major grid event is suspected. WaterBOB in the bathtub. Every pot and container in the kitchen. Every storage barrel you own. Do it in the first hour — not after you've assessed the situation for two days.

The Water System That Actually Works
After building and testing my own family's water system — and applying the threat assessment mindset I developed in NBC school — here's the layered approach I recommend:
- Layer 1 — Stored water. Minimum 30 days at 2 gallons per person per day. Food-grade containers only. Stored in a cool, dark location. Rotated every 6 months.
- Layer 2 — Gravity filtration. A Berkey filter or equivalent that works with zero electricity. This turns any water source — rain, river, pool — into safe drinking water without any power or pressure.
- Layer 3 — Portable filtration. A Sawyer Squeeze filter in every bug-out bag and vehicle. Individual-level filtration that works in any situation.
- Layer 4 — Chemical treatment. Water purification tablets as emergency backup. Unscented bleach with known concentration. For when layers 1 through 3 aren't available.
- Layer 5 — Knowledge. Know where your nearest natural water sources are. Know how to boil water on a camp stove. Know the bleach-to-water ratios. The gear is only as good as the person using it.
Build the system in layers. Start with stored water this week. Add filtration next month. Master the chemical treatment knowledge before you need it. This is how you build real water security — not by buying one filter and hoping for the best.
